Ultrasound Guided Breast Procedures
Ultrasound serves as an imaging guide for minor breast procedures, such as cyst aspirations and biopsies. Both procedures are performed in the office under sterile conditions.
Cyst Aspiration
Local anesthetic may be administered. Under ultrasound guidance, a small needle is placed into the breast and guided into the cyst. The cyst fluid is removed, and may be sent for cytologic evaluation.
Breast Biopsy
Local anesthetic is administered. A small incision is made at the skin surface. Using ultrasound guidance, a biopsy device is advanced into the lesion and several small pieces of tissue are obtained. Following the biopsy, a marking clip is placed at the site of biopsy. Compression is held over the site following the procedure. Small adhesive strips are placed over the incision and the area is bandaged. A mammogram may be performed following the biopsy, in order to identify the marking clip placement. Specimens are sent for pathologic evaluation. Results are usually obtained 2-3 days following the procedure.
